Indiana weather is unpredictable and situations such as a power failure can occur at any time. The following information is designed to help families prepare for just such an event and be aware of the school's procedures to keep our children safe.
In the event school must be closed or delayed due to hazardous weather conditions or other unforeseen reason, the superintendent will communicate the decision primarily through the Skyward system. Families will receive an automated telephone call and text message as soon as the decision has been made.
Closing or delaying school is taken very seriously as student safety, especially during the winter months, dictates the decision. School officials use the latest weather information, consult with highway departments and police agencies, and discuss conditions with neighboring school districts in making the assessment to close or delay school. Although communication will occur through Skyward, local radio (102.3fm) and Indianapolis television stations will also be notified.
The procedures for a school delay are as follows:
- Bus pickup and school start times will be the same amount of time as the called delay. If school is on a two-hour delay, bus pick-up and school start time will be two hours later than normal.
- Developmental Pre-School A.M. classes at Waverly Elementary are cancelled; however P.M. classes will be on the regular schedule.
- Career Center A.M. classes at Ben Davis High School are cancelled; however, P.M. classes will be on regular schedule.
Elementary Latch Key Programs: Open at regular times on a school delay but are closed when school is closed.
