The Mooresville Schools Board of Directors has approved a calendar for the 2012-2013
academic year. The calendar is similar to Plainfield and Monrovia school districts and is slightly
modified from Mooresville’s current school calendar.

A school calendar study team consisting of 35 members, including parents, community
members, business representatives, representatives from local youth-serving organizations,
and educators, studied possible calendar configurations for the upcoming academic year. In
addition to the study team members, input into this year’s calendar recommendation included
staff surveys and a community survey which received more than 1,300 responses.

The survey feedback and a number of variables, including required state testing dates,
alignment with area career and vocational programs, alignment with other area schools, and
local events and activities, were taken into consideration.

The newly adopted calendar starts on August 7, 2012, has a one-week fall break and spring
break, includes the traditional two-week semester break, and a last day of school on May 24,
2013. All students in Indiana are required to attend 180 days of school but the calendar is set by
the local districts.

“I believe this is the right calendar at this time for our students, families, community and entire
school district,” said Superintendent Brad Lindsay, “but we will continue to explore the
‘balanced’ calendar which is increasingly being implemented across the state and we will learn
from those school communities the benefits and challenges the balanced calendar is

Lindsay added, “This also allows for more time to develop a vision in how we would maximize
the learning opportunities the balanced calendar provides. It also allows us to learn what comes
out of this state legislative session in regard to school start dates and to do an in-depth cost
analysis of a balanced, traditional, or other calendar setup.”

A school calendar study team will re-form in the spring to study and recommend the 2013-2014
calendar. A recommendation for the 2013-2014 calendar is scheduled to be presented to the
school board at its October 2012 meeting with a decision acted upon at the November 2012, so
families may have ample opportunity to plan for vacation time for the 2013-2014 academic
