Safety Activities
 


The following is a guide of activites taking place at MCSC schools under each different level of Homeland Security awareness. Each event is different and additional measures may be taken as needed to insure the safety of our students and staff.

Code Red

Severe Risk


·
Be alert to suspicious activity and report it to authorities immediately
·Complete actions at lower levels
· Listen to radio and television for current information/instructions
·Close school if recommended by appropriate authorities
·Monitor at front door
·100% identification check on anyone entering buildings
·Counselors and staff alert to stress and mental health factors
·Monitor all field trips carefully on a daily basis, assess need to cancel
·Cancel outdoor recess and PE until further notice
·Eliminate parking vehicles close to buildings
· Regular building checks by maintenance and custodians
·Check doors regularly to make sure they are locked
·Distribute letters/notices of how threat is being addressed

Code Orange

High Risk


·
Be alert to suspicious activity and report it to authorities immediately
·Complete actions at lower levels
·Prepare to handle inquiries from parents and media
· Discuss children’s fears concerning possible terrorist attacks
·Buildings informed of alert status change
·Assess risk with local public safety officials
·Inspect all building safety equipment to assure it’s working properly
·Administration - provide staff with tips on handling student questions, appropriate student activities, and observing stress levels

Code Yellow

Elevated Risk


·
Be alert to suspicious activity and report it to authorities immediately
·Complete actions at lower levels
·Staff members review all crisis plans and re-familiarize
·Assess need to cancel recess, outdoor PE, and/or field trips
·Staff reads and studies information on preparedness for threats and safety

Code Blue

Guarded Risk


·
Be alert to suspicious activity and report it to authorities immediately
·Complete actions at lower level
·Conduct drills following the emergency plan at all levels
·Study ways to improve security and preparedness
·Use visitor control procedures

Code Green

Low Risk


·
Encourage safety courses such as CPR/AED and first aid
·Review and build upon all aspects of safety preparedness
·Convene Safety Committee regularly
·Monitor Safety Hotline daily
·Conduct bus and school emergency drills regularly
·Students and staff study personal safety methods
